April 25: WM confirmed that it will acquire Minnesota-based Hometown Haulers, effective May 1. Hometown Haulers wrote on Facebook that WM will “honor all existing base rates for at least twelve months.” The company, which is based in Dodge City, provides a range of hauling services in the region.
Sibelco, a global materials company based in Belgium, has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Texas-based Strategic Materials. The deal is expected to close by the end of Q2 or early Q3. Strategic, which operates 42 facilities and is a leading glass recycler in North America, recently emerged from bankruptcy proceedings.
Other recent deals include Kinderhook-backed CARDS Recycling added to its Arkansas holdings with the acquisition of Phillips Trash Service, Waste Today reported. GFL Environmental also recently acquired Little Traverse Disposal, based in Harbor Springs, Michigan.
The waste and recycling industry's M&A activity has neared historic levels in recent years.
Collective M&A spending by the U.S. solid waste industry's publicly traded companies approached an estimated $4.2 billion in 2023 and $6.3 billion in 2022. This total does not include deals involving companies with private equity or infrastructure fund backing, which have become increasingly active in recent years.
